Low weight gain best for obese pregnant women

Obese women can gain little or no weight during pregnancy — and even lose a few pounds — without harming their babies, new research suggests.
Obese mothers who put on less than the recommended 15 pounds were less likely to develop pregnancy-related high blood pressure or deliver by Caesarean section and more likely to have a normal-weight baby, the study showed.
The findings, in the October issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology, fuel growing concern that national weight-gain guidelines for pregnant women are outdated and don’t take into account the nation’s obesity epidemic.
Changes considered
The Institute of Medicine, which issued the weight guidelines in 1990, is about to consider changing them.
Dr. Raul Artal, one of the study’s authors, said the fear has been that not gaining weight would hurt the fetus.
“Not only were there no deleterious effects, but there are benefits,” said Artal of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, who supports changing the weight guidelines.
In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Patrick Catalano of Case Western Reserve University, noted that the current guidelines were written when the concern was low birth weights. Now it’s shifted to rising obesity, he said.
Artal said pregnancy is one of the main causes of obesity in women.
Using information from birth certificates, the study analyzed the pregnancies of more than 120,000 obese women from Missouri to see how weight gain affected their blood pressure, C-sections and the baby’s birth weight. Obesity increases a woman’s risk of miscarriage and other serious complications such as gestational diabetes.
The study found that 23 percent of the obese women gained less than 15 pounds, 31 percent gained 15 to 25 pounds and nearly half gained more than 25 pounds. Those who gained less had better outcomes.
The researchers considered three levels of obesity based on body mass index, or BMI, and came up with optimal ranges of weight gain. For a BMI of 30-34.9, the best outcomes came with a weight gain of 10 to 25 pounds; gaining less than 9 pounds was best for a BMI of 35-39.9 and losing up to 9 pounds was best for those with a BMI over 40.
The study’s strengths are its size — drawing from an entire state — and that it is the first to look at different levels of obesity, “not a lumping of all obese women together,” said Dr. Emily Oken, a Harvard Medical School professor and researcher on obesity, nutrition and weight gain in pregnancy.
The Missouri study found that the least-heavy obese women who lost weight were at somewhat higher risk to have a low birth-weight baby. However, they still benefited by having fewer other complications. Obese women who gain too much are also at risk for low birth-weight babies, Oken said, adding “It is a balance.” Artal said that occurs predominantly in obese women with high blood pressure.
Catalano said that because almost half of pregnant women gain more than the recommended amount of weight, encouraging them to stay within the current guidelines is a significant challenge. But Artal said he has found women are more likely to modify their behavior during pregnancy because of concern for their child.
Catalona suggested advising pregnant women to eat a balanced diet low in sugars and saturated fats and to get moderate exercise, like walking or swimming. He also recommended referring obese women to a nutritionist and urging patients to lose weight after they give birth to avoid problems in future pregnancies.
In the coming weeks, the Institute of Medicine, a private organization that advises the federal government, is expected to begin the lengthy process of gathering scientific evidence to decide whether the guidelines should be changed, said spokeswoman Christine Stencel.
Under the institute’s 1990 guidelines, those with a “normal” body mass index — a combination of height and weight — are encouraged to gain 25 to 35 pounds. Women considered overweight have a lower target: 15 to 25 pounds. Women with a low BMI should gain more weight during pregnancy — up to 40 pounds.

eat baklava then carry on lol
Ok well after restarting in feb again. i re started on monday AGAIN lol
its seems this time around of trying to diet i just cant get into it, hense i keep restarting.
well anyways i had a restart on monday and i have watched what i have been eating since then. any snacks i may have had extra have either been low fat or healthy option.
yesterday we went to the halal market to buy some chicken. and we saw some baklava in the counter at the front, so i begged hubby and he said ok , lets buy. we brought a little tray of 6 mini pastries. AND OH MY GOD THEY WERE HEAVEN lol
(Baklava (Ottoman Turkish: باقلوا) is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey. It is characteristic of the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire and much of central and southwest Asia)
we had a nice dinner last night prior to the deserts of baklava. we had rice, roasted piri piri chicken, chicken curry, fresh salad, mint yogurt dip. alll very good for u and tasty.
ok so i wouldny say last nights feast was BAD for u but i know i wanna push myself if i wanna loose big amounts of weight so back on track this morning.
Boiled eggs and toast with a cup of coffee.

Gone off the rails

well what can i say.i have gone off the rails. i havent been wtaching anything i eat and have been eating everything and anything, i havent cared. But now i do! today i start again. insha allah. each night i lay in bed thinking about the day ive had. I think about what ive ate and why. Almost every night i go bed angry at myself and determined the next day to start again but i never did. but today is diffferent.
if i carry on eating the way i have for the last few weeks i will gain what took me 5 months to loose. so need to stop and get back on track.
i need to work on my cravings. i fine it hard to control them. they kill me, they own me. the urge when i want something is sickening. if its not in the house then i go and buy it. But i dont have any money at the moment. which is a good and bad thing. My husband is the wage earner so every week we go to the supermarket together and buy a weeks shopping. I doesnt normally contain foods that are high in fat or bad for you but if he wants crisps and biscuits occasionally then he will buy them.
we basically buy the essentials. milk, bread, rice, beans, tomatoes, cheese, eggs, oven chips, onions, yogurt. etc etc
But with only a limited amount of money we cant buy fruits and too many veggies. which i actually love.
But if i have money. i will buy a few extras. or go out during the week to buy snacks.
I have got to stop. well have no choice now.
Im getting weighed next week 23/2 , and i dont wanna get on the scales and be close to where i was when i started. if i can diet for 3 days i know it will make a difference.
ok so i have kick started the day off with breakfast which was
1 poached egg, baked beans, brown toast(no butter, dry, and half tin plum tomatoes.
maybe lunch i will have pasta meal(which is free on slimming world)
and maybe for dinner i will make a chunky soup with the potatoes and 1 leek i have.
xxx pray for me x

Im now on medication to control my under active thyroid. still taking the xenical, and oh my goodness 2 weeks ago i experienced the bad side affects. i made samosa`s for hubby and just had to have some.

i fried them in oil so the fat content was threw the roof ! lol well i think you can guess what happened.
anyways i had a lapse but now im back on track. i met my fitness instructor last week and shes very nice. she showed me a few simple and very easy exercises i can do whilst im swimming. basically just a tummy tuck. lifting knees up and down to strengthen lower tummy muscles. after the winter holidays i will attempt a work out at the gym.
well thats about it. im planning to visit my family for winter and i know there will be lots of foods that i will want to eat but gonna try my hardest not to binge on them.

Lost 6 pounds but i binged

yey i was soo happy when i left the surgery yesterday. i stood on those scales and was delighted and shocked to see i was 3.2kgs lighter. it was such a boost to me. also i had my blood pressure checked and its was back down to a normal reading 119 over 90 .
so everything is good, i asked the nurse why am i constipated while taking xenical, and she said its strange but common, she said some people up the fat content just so they can have a bowel explosion lol
i might give that a miss
sooo i went straight to the shop and brought 2 choccy bars, gave half of one to hubby and ate the rest. but that was just the beginning.
the whole day i just binged, even those all my meals were correct and low fat.
in total the amount of crap i ate is
1 and a half choccy bars
4 bags of skips crisps
4 or 5 mini frozen chocolate eclairs- i lost count lol
3 extra pieces of bread
and too many rich tea biscuits
im allowing 25 slimming world syns a day but think yesterdays binge must of went to at least 40 syns. hey ho, today is another day and im back on track. not gonna have anything norty for a couple of days and give myself a good kick start to week 2.

ok well the last 3 weeks have been crazy. one day im dieting the next im binging on everything and just cant stop. i was optimistic that when i went back to the doctors i would of lost loads of weight but i only lost a pound, which is still good but i really didnt put my mind to it.
on wed i went to the docs and she gave me the orlistat weight loss pills, and now im on day 2. so far so good, i dont feel any different, im religiously sticking to slimming world , mainly the green days, so that lots of potatoes, rice, pasta, low fat cheese/yogurts etc, whilst having unlimited fruit and veg and upto 20 syns a day.
ive stopped frying food for myself. i miss homemade onion bhaji`s though mmmmmm.
but i gotta change my ways.
so day 2 and things are going well. i went swimming Monday night but not this morning as i over slept but i will go tomorrow night insha allah. oh and also the doctor gave me a prescription for the gym. so that will include swimming and use of the gym. thing is there only one morning for the women so will have to make the most of it on that one day. but i do feel embarrassed to do all that gym exercise, i will wobbly lol
i dont mind swimming as im submerged in water and u can only see my head lol
im really pushing myself this week, as ive made weekly weigh in`s with the nurse at my surgery which is better as gives me something to work too.

Orlistat - Help With Weight Loss
Orlistat is a drug that can help you to lose weight if you are obese or overweight. It works by interfering with the way that fat is digested and absorbed into the body. Doctors have guidelines as to when orlistat can be prescribed. You can also buy orlistat from pharmacies - but certain conditions apply, detailed below. If you take orlistat, as it may possibly interfere with the absorbtion of some vitamins, you should take a multivitamin supplement at bedtime. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you take any other drugs as orlistat can interfere with the absorbtion of some drugs.

the price of crap food compared to fruit and veg
Last night i popped into the supermarket before it closed to see what bargains i could grab, as in the way of fruits and veg that has past its sell by date. and yes i got a packet of mushrooms for 75p and oranges for 69p all reduced. But as i walked round i noticed that the reduced fatty foods, such as biscuits or cake slices were dirt cheap.
As low as 25p for a pack of 5 cake slices that were £1.00 plus.
now i did think twice before i picked them up , as im trying to not eat crap and have started the new diet. but i did, i just couldn't not buy that food for so cheap.
but it made me think, its true that crap food is always cheaper. its a shame.
i did equal out my shopping basket with fruit and veg and a few sweet things but i wish healthy food was 25p !

this is it, new diet

ok ive put this off for too long. The new diet. it has to be done. i was led in bed this morning after my morning prayer thinking some things got to give. ive gotta try and shift this weight. im OBESE, seriously Obese. yes im happy and not bothered what people think but i cant go on forever like this. 4 years ago i had gall stones and because i couldn't hardly eat anything i lost rather alot of weight and started to look and feel great, but ever since i had the gall bladder removal operation the weight started to creep back on as i started to gain a new love relationship with FOOD.
food is my enemy, its the addiction i cant kick. it would be ok if i could give it up forever but i still had to take some everyday. sometimes i think to myself, "get a grip, why do i let food rule me", its like i cant stop, literally . some days im like any other normal eater, normal meals, good healthy balance, and then other days oh god i cant stop. i want to just keep chewing and tasting things.
These days i feel sick so that makes me stop, but as a teenager i didnt stop and sometimes was physically sick.
from my earliest memories ive found food to be a great source of satisfaction. at the age of 8 i remember being offered a dietician but i refused. maybe if my mother had taken control and said yes we need your help maybe at that age i could of changed everything around.
But no, at 25 im still going strong and piling the pounds. well actually its stopped but it fluctuates between a few pounds but stays around an alarming weight, which i am not going to share, because no women should ever see the scales move round to that number .
i always seem to be on a diet. and in the past they do work as long as i dont get bored after the first month. I tend to stick to slimming world as its very free and easy and feel my body likes their healthy eating approach.
so this is what im gonna stick to. and share all my ups and downs in the process.
I hope to god, i stick to this.
god willing i will be thinner !
